2008 Weeki Wachee Exploration Project

The 2008 Weeki Wachee Exploration Project takes over where the 2007 project ended. In 2007, the Karst Underwater Research team explored and surveyed over approximately 6,700’ feet of new passage in addition to discovering one section of the cave that dropped to a depth of 407’, making Weeki Wachee Spring the deepest naturally formed spring in the United States.

The 2008 exploration will focus collecting scientific information, more detailed surveying and mapping of the existing passage and exploring new passage. Additionally, scientific tasks such as radio location, water sampling, core sampling and formation study and retrieval will be performed. This year’s exploration will also have new participants involved in scientific analysis, such as USF Karst, USGS and Diver’s Alert Network.

KUR’s exploration of Weeki Wachee Spring is made possible by its generous sponsors Dive Rite, Golem Gear, Haskel International, National Association for Cave Diving (NACD), Salvo Diving, Silent Submersion and Tampa Adventure Sports.
