2011 NACD Vertical Workshop
"The first NACD Vertical Clinic was a great success. Thanks to instruction and demonstration by Curt Bowen, Walter Pickel, and Jon Bojar for a great clinic.
The day began with gear demonstration and review with Walter Pickel and Jon Bojar. All the participants got dressed up with the gear they needed to descend into a pit and climb back out safely. They covered various types of harnesses, ascending systems, descender’s, helmets, cow's tails, and all the other tools of the trade.
After getting geared up, the participants went cave-side to get a demonstration by Curt Bowen on rigging ropes. The importance of selecting a proper anchor, the correct knots to use, redirects, and other considerations were all touched upon. After getting the Pit rigged, Curt demonstrated how to lower someone into a pit by using a standard rappell rack.
Jon Bojar waited at the bottom of the pit at Jennings cave while Walter and Curt got the participants ready to rappel. The participants got instruction on using rappel devices, navigating over the lip, and then finally they were sent down. Once at the bottom, the participants got to enjoy a little Florida dry caving while everyone took their turn coming down the rope.
Then it came time to climb back out, and each participant took their turn using the ascending system to climb out of the pit. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot about vertical caving and dry caving.
