NACD Science Committee Mission Statement

Prepared by Skip Kendrick, Science Committee Chair

July, 2007

The objective of the NACD Science Committee is to promote various scientific endeavors in support of education, conservation, exploration, and safe cave diving.  The scientific endeavors are divided into three primary categories:  Cave Science, Human Science, and Equipment Science.

In many cases the Science Committee addresses issues that may overlap with the mission of other NACD committees.  It is intended that the Science Committee focus primarily on basic research that will provide needed information to the other committees.  For example, water quality is both a Science issue and a Conservation issue.  The Science Committee may support water quality assessments, collect and organize the data, publish the information in appropriate journals, and report to the Conservation Committee those findings deemed "in need of action."  The Conservation Committee would then decide on the appropriate action needed.
