A message from the Safety Director:

I am pleased to report a safe third quarter with respect to cave diving.  With the river levels low and the lack of rain, though tough on our water table, the diving in central Florida has been outstanding.  For the most part, the flow has been down, and the visibility is up.  Line and sign donations were slow this quarter, however local cave diver Sean Denney and I took the opportunity to dive and install about 400’ of gold line in a cave that was new for both of us, Gator Hole.  As many of you know, Telford is currently closed.  Please respect the landowner’s wishes and be patient until the cave is reopened.  A local safety concern that should be observed is the low visibility in the Peacock Basin.  Visibility lately has ranged from one to five feet.  I have observed many people giant-striding into the Peacock I basin from the bottom of the stairs.  Keep in mind, Rebreather cave diving is growing in popularity, so watching for bubbles before you leap may not be adequate.  There are additional stairs conveniently located at the bottom of the staircase on the left hand side.  These work well for entering the water as well as exiting.  I would like to thank everyone for their continued efforts in keeping our caves a safe and enjoyable place to dive.  Keep up the good work.

Richard Dreher – International Safety Director
